Event Invitation: The Importance of Intangibles in the Changing Job Market

26 August 2009

The Importance of Intangibles in the Changing Job Market

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009,

5:00– 6:30 p.m., with Reception to Follow

UCLA School of Law , Room 1430

Finding a Job that's Right for You

The classes of 2010, 2011, and 2012 are the "guinea pigs" for firms re-thinking hiring, training, billing and compensation. Smart job searches are the key to success. Walk into your next interview knowing what makes a future employer right for you so you can tell them why you're right for them.

And then what?

Soft Skills Bridge the Gap from Foot in the Door to Employment Offer

Join Jessie Kornberg, Executive Director, Ms. JD and three BigLaw hiring partners for a panel discussion of the intangibles to success job hunting and career advancement: how to utilize professor & attorney mentorships, foster professional networks, and effectively self-promote within those relationships.

Practice Make Perfect

Following the panel discussion join members of WLALA and the Beverly Hills Bar Association for a reception in the courtyard and put the advice on intangibles to use!

This Ms. JD & NWLSO event is made possible by generous support from McGuireWoods, a 2009 Best Law Firm for Women Award Winner.

Please note: Parking at UCLA is limited. $10 garage parking and credit card enabled metered parking is available on the campus, but carpooling is strongly recommended.

For more information contact Jessie Kornberg (kornberg@ms-jd.org).

A More Strategic Approach to Job Postings

13 May 2009

I can’t tell you how many times I hear the following complaint from job seekers:  “I send out 5-10 resumes every week in response to job postings, but I haven’t heard back from anyone.”

Technology has made it extremely easy for job seekers to find openings and apply for jobs.  In some cases, you can submit an application online in a matter of seconds.  This results in employers receiving a large volume of applications to review.  How do you get employers to take notice of your application?

CULTIVATING PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

By Betty Chia, Assistant Director of Career Services

06 May 2009

Law students and recent alumni alike cringe when I use the term networking.  “I don’t like asking people for favors or for a job” or “I have a business card and I followed up, now what?” are common conversations I have when I broach the subject that networking is an important component of the job search.  Many law students and alumni find networking to be insincere and therefore an ineffective way to leverage connections.  Networking, though, doesn’t need to comprise of inconsequential conversation over semi-warm hors d'oeuvres.  Instead it could be an opportunity to gain legal expertise, help others in need, and build professional relationships.

This past weekend, I volunteered with the Los Angeles County Bar Association’s (LACBA) Barristers Division to advise individuals and families at the Foreclosure Relief Clinic in downtown Los Angeles.  By participating in this event, I sharpened my legal skills in a new area of law, provided a hard-working family with options on how to save their home and met attorneys from different practices that I would feel comfortable contacting in the future.
